The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill that will send any
social media critic to 2yrs in prison if the criticisms are
tagged to be false. Although, this bill gives room for a fine of
4million naira, it still sounds odd. Although this bill hasn't
been passed into law but with the look of things, it might be
one soon.
The bill which was passed second reading in the Senate on
Tuesday, Dec 1 seeks a 2yr sentence for anyone who makes
allegation or publishes any statement or petition in the
newspaper, radio, or medium of whatever prescription against
another person, institution of government or any public office
holder.
The bill also makes recommendations that any person who
sends any false text messages or post false messages on the
social media against another person shall face serious
punishment after being convicted by the court of law.
The bill also gives an option of 2 million naira fine for
offenders of false text messages, whatsapp, Facebook,
Twitter, instagram.
